Connie Willis has won six Nebula and six Hugo Awards (more than any other science fiction writer), winning both a Nebula and Hugo award for her novel "Doomsday Book".  She worked for five years on this novel about a history student in 2048 who is transported to an English village in the 14th century. Mistakenly, the student arrives on the eve of the onset of the Black Plague. Her dealings with a family from 1348 and with her historian cohorts in 2048 lead to complications as the book unfolds into a surprisingly dark and deep conclusion. Connie explores the ageless issues of evil, suffering, and the indomitable will of the human spirit which are universal to all people in all time periods.

Connie was born on December 31, 1945, in Denver, Colorado. She majored in English in college and married a physics teacher. Her interest in science, however, dates back to reading "Have Space Suit, Will Travel" by Robert A. Heinlein (her favorite science fiction writer) who has always believed that people should be interested in everything. She admires the intelligence of his characterizations and his use of humor, which generally is in short supply in science fiction works and in life in general. She has stated that one of the themes she has tried to highlight in  her own works like "Schwarzschild Radius", At the Rialto, and Bellwether is the connection between science and virtually everything else, even the Hula Hoop and Grauman's Chinese Theater.
